Oud-Hollandse Zeeuwse knoop sieraden in een modern jasje - Verbonden met het verleden

Old Dutch Zeeland knot jewelry with a modern twist - Connected to the past

🌿 Connected to the past — Old Dutch knot jewelry with a modern twist

There's something special about jewelry that carries a piece of history with it.
As a goldsmith in Enkhuizen, a city steeped in craftsmanship and history, I feel a deep affinity with the traditional Old Dutch knot — better known as the Zeeland knot.
This graceful, spherical knot has been a symbol of craftsmanship, pride and solidarity for centuries.

The Old Dutch knot – worn throughout the Netherlands

Although the name “Zeeuwse knoop” is best known today, these jewelry items were not only worn in Zeeland.
The knot remained in use there the longest and thus became the symbol of this type of jewelry, but its origins and uses were much wider.
Also in regions such as In Urk, Volendam, the Veluwe, North Holland and West Friesland, buttons were part of the traditional costume.

Men wore them as throat buttons to fasten their blouses or as decoration during holidays, while women often used the buttons to fasten caps or scarves or wore them on special occasions, such as births, weddings or mourning.
Each knot told its own story— a piece of jewelry full of meaning, interwoven with everyday life. What once began as a functional object grew into a beloved symbol of identity, connection, and pride—worn by people from all walks of life.

From tradition to timeless jewelry

In my studio in Enkhuizen I have immersed myself in this rich tradition.
The technique, the shapes, the symbolism — everything about it breathes history.
But I also wanted to let the button speak again, in a way that suits today.

That is why you will find in my collection of Zeeland knot jewellery in which the classic shape plays a refined, contemporary role.
Each piece is handcrafted with attention to detail and respect for the craft – a tribute to the past with a modern and wearable look.

A piece of the Netherlands, carried around the world

What always touches me is how these pieces garner international admiration. Customers from countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand often discover my jewelry because they still have a Dutch family lineage or heritage. For them, a knotted piece of jewelry is more than just an accessory — it's a piece of connection to their roots, a tangible reminder of their origins, worn with pride in the present.

Enkhuizen – a city full of stories

The fact that these pieces of jewelry find their way from my studio in Enkhuizen completes the story.
The city, with its ships, ports and rich history, breathes the same spirit of tradition and craftsmanship that is encapsulated in the knot.
Here, between the water and the silver, past and future come together — just as in the jewelry itself.
