Sometimes something crosses your path that touches your heart. That happened when I was asked to design and create the chain of office for the children's mayor of Enkhuizen. An honorable commission, not only because of its official nature, but also because it is so closely connected to the city where I live, my profession, and my love of meaningful jewelry.
Arriving at a design together
In consultation with the municipality, a clear starting point quickly emerged: the three herring fish, the symbol of Enkhuizen. They are not only found in the city's coat of arms and flag, but are also deeply intertwined with the history of this old fishing town. The design had to feel playful and light, appropriate for a child, but also with a sense of dignity.
In addition to the fish, we chose the gemstones Coral and Citrine, in red and yellow – a subtle reference to the Enkhuizen flag. The stones also symbolize strength, energy, and cheerfulness: qualities that perfectly suit the role of children's mayor and children's council.
Craftsmanship and love for the trade
For me, it was extra special to be able to make the fish. They're crafted using a combination of silversmithing and a technique close to my heart: wire wrapping. From the moment I discovered this technique, it felt like coming home. Working with wire gives me freedom, spontaneity, and a certain playfulness that is visible in each fish.
Inauguration Day
On July 1, 2025, the time had come: the installation of the children's mayor and the children's council. A beautiful moment, which I, as the creator of the chain of office, was proud to witness. It was moving to see the chain—my creation—placed with such meaning on the new representative of Enkhuizen's youth. A symbol of commitment, collaboration, and the future.
More than one piece of jewelry
During the creative process, I discovered I enjoyed creating these fish so much that I knew they had to have a permanent place in my work. That's why you'll see them reflected in my jewelry designs – as a collection inspired by the theme, with room for personal interpretation. An ode to Enkhuizen, to craftsmanship, and to the joy of creation.
