Sometimes something comes your way that touches your heart. That happened when I was asked to design and make the chain of office for the children's mayor of Enkhuizen. An honorable assignment, not only because of its official nature, but also because it is so strongly connected to the city in which I live, my profession and my love for meaningful jewelry.
Arriving at a design together
In consultation with the municipality, a clear starting point quickly emerged: the three herring fish, the symbol of Enkhuizen. They are not only found in the city coat of arms and the flag, but are also deeply interwoven with the history of this old fishing town. The design was allowed to feel playful and light, fitting for a child, but also with a sense of dignity.
In addition to the fish, we chose the gemstones Coral and Citrine, in the colors red and yellow - a subtle reference to the Enkhuizen flag. The stones also symbolize strength, energy and cheerfulness: qualities that fit beautifully with the role of children's mayor and children's council.
Craftsmanship and love for the profession
For me it was extra special to be allowed to make the fish. They are made with a combination of silversmithing and a technique that is close to my heart: wire wrapping – the winding of silver wire. From the moment I discovered this technique, it felt like coming home. Working with wire gives me freedom, spontaneity and a certain playfulness that is visible in every fish.
The day of the inauguration
On July 1, 2025, the time had come: the installation of the children's mayor and the children's council. A beautiful moment, which I, as the creator of the official chain, was proud to attend. It was moving to see how the chain - my creation - was hung with so much meaning on the new representative of the youth of Enkhuizen. A symbol of involvement, cooperation and future.
More than one piece of jewelry
During the making process I discovered that I enjoyed creating these fish so much that I knew they had to have a permanent place in my work. That is why you will see them in my jewelry designs – as a collection inspired by the theme, with room for your own interpretation. An ode to Enkhuizen, to the craft, and to the joy of creating.
