In fishing villages like Urk, this is still visible today: young men there still proudly wear a gold earring, often with a ship engraved on it. It's more than just a piece of jewelry – it's a sign of connection with their roots and life at sea.
In other cultures, too, the earring was a masculine symbol – from kings in the East to warriors in Africa. Only in the 20th century did this image change, and the male earring became more often associated with subcultures or a rebellious image.
