🐟 A herring in silver? The power of symbolism in jewelry from the Herring City

A city built on herring

Enkhuizen, the city where my studio is located, breathes history. During the Golden Age, this port city grew into a major player in the herring fishery. Herring brought prosperity, employment, and community. To this day, you still see the small fish in the city's coat of arms and on facade stones – a small, gleaming symbol of a grand past.

More than just a fish – the herring as a symbol

For me, the herring is more than just a piece of history. It represents perseverance, simplicity, community, and also loyalty to your roots. In a world full of fast fashion and a throwaway culture, that's precisely what I want to capture in a piece of jewelry: meaning, craftsmanship, and something that lasts.

A silver herring isn't just decorative; it tells a story. Your story, perhaps—of origins, of a love of water, of something precious you hold dear.

From inspiration to craft

Recently, I've been working in my studio on jewelry pieces that center around this symbolism. Sometimes playful, like a fish bone earring or pendant. Other times subtle and refined—with an eye for detail and a nod to the past. Each design begins with a feeling or memory of Enkhuizen: the smell of the harbor, the sparkle of the salty air, the history beneath your feet. A special project in the making

I'm currently working behind the scenes on a special project featuring the fish from Enkhuizen. I can't reveal much about it yet, but I'll share the final result in early July – and I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.
