Are you deciding between 9-karat, 14-karat, 14-karat gold-filled, or gold-plated? Not all gold jewelry is created equal. This article will explain the differences, so you can make the right choice for your style and budget.
One gold is not the same as another
Gold is rarely used pure in jewelry. Pure gold (24 karat) is too soft. Therefore, it is mixed with other metals. This creates different types:
9 Karat Gold (9 kt): 37.5% gold. Affordable, durable, but less valuable.
14 Karat Gold (14kt): 58.5% gold. Popular choice: sturdy, classic, and beautiful in color.
18 Karat Gold (18kt): 75% gold. Luxurious appearance, rich in color, but more fragile.
Other options:
14kt Goldfilled – gold, but different
A thick layer of 14kt gold on a base metal. More durable than gold plating, more affordable than solid gold.
Gold Plated – for those who love variety
A thin gold layer over copper or another metal. Beautiful for jewelry you don't wear every day.
Brass – gold look, without gold
Copper alloy with a warm color. Inexpensive, but can become dull.
Gold Vermeil – luxury version
A thick gold layer over sterling silver. Hypoallergenic, durable, and more expensive than gold-plated.
